Travelling with eSim – 2023 guide

What is an eSIM?

An eSIM, or embedded SIM, is digital replacement for SIM cards that have been used in mobile phones primarily since the advent of 2G networks in the 1990’s. The advantage of eSIM’s are that they can be programmed with different carrier profiles. Where traditional SIM cards that are removable and can only store one carrier profile at a time, eSIMs offer a range of benefits to carriers and users. In this article, we will look at the benefits for travelers who need to stay connected on the go.

What are the benefits of using an eSIM when travelling?

One of the most significant advantages of using an eSIM for traveling with a smartphone is the convenience it offers. With a traditional SIM card, travelers must purchase a new SIM card from a local carrier each time they arrive in a new country, often requiring them to navigate complex language barriers and confusing pricing structures. With an eSIM, however, travelers can simply download a new carrier profile onto their device, eliminating the need to physically change the SIM card.

Another benefit of eSIM’s when traveling is the ability to switch carriers quickly and easily. If a traveler encounters poor signal strength or slow data speeds with their current carrier, they can simply switch to another carrier profile on their eSIM without having to physically swap out the SIM card. This can be particularly helpful for travelers who are on the move and may not have time to stop and purchase a new SIM card in person.

A number of users have traditionally swapped the sim card from their home provider with a local carrier when travelling to utilise the benefit of local networks and cheaper call and data rates. However, with smartphones that are “dual sim” compatible, users can leave their “home” sim active in the device and have a secondary service available for use. All data and calls can be directed through the nominated sim card. This ensures that a user remains connected on their regular plan without having to pay largely exorbitant roaming fees.

eSIMs also offer cost savings for travelers. With traditional SIM cards, travelers are often forced to pay high roaming fees for data usage while abroad. With an eSIM, however, travelers can shop around for the best carrier deals and purchase a local carrier profile with competitive pricing. This can save travelers significant amounts of money on data usage while still allowing them to stay connected.

Finally, eSIMs can also provide added security for travelers. Traditional SIM cards can be easily removed from a device, making it possible for someone else to access a traveler’s phone number and personal information. With an eSIM, however, the SIM card is embedded directly into the device, making it much more difficult for someone to steal or clone the SIM card.

What smartphones are eSim compatible?

eSIM phones have been available in Australia since 2018. Most top-tier phones now support eSIM. The following phone series support eSIM:

  • Apple: iPhone XS / iPhone XR and newer
  • Samsung: Galaxy S20 and newer, Galaxy Fold and never, Galaxy Z Flip and newer
  • Google: Pixel 3a and newer
  • OPPO: Find X3 Pro and newer, Find X3 and newer
  • iPads from 2019 and on also support eSIM.

While eSIM support is still very rare in non-flagship phones, its worth noting that devices specifications can vary from country to country and you should check with the manufacturer of your device if you are unsure.

When considering using an eSim provider, you need to factor what type of sim you are already using in your device.

For example with eSim compatible iPhones:

  • iPhone XS, 11, 12 and 13 – support one eSim and one physical sim.
  • iPhone 14 – supports dual eSim (or 1 x eSim and 1 x physical sim).

Therefore, if you are already using an eSim on your iPhone, you will only be able to install a physical sim UNLESS you are using an iPhone 14 or above.

Choosing a provider when you travel

If you want to take advantage of an eSIM whilst travelling, you have a multitude of providers to choose from. However, when deciding who to go with, you should think about these factors to determine your best fit:

  • Where are you travelling to?
  • How long are you travelling for?
  • Are you intending on travelling to multiple countries and/or continents on your trip?

eSIM Providers

If I went through all the options available in each country or continent, this article would be too long and unreadable. So reasons of readability, I will focus on eSIM providers that are designed for travellers and meet the following requirements:

  • App based sign up and eSIM install
  • Automatic (carrier) activation of eSim
  • The provider has country specific plans and regional plans (Europe, North America or Asia) for travellers visiting multiple countries in one trip.

Here are some eSIM provider examples with countries, recharge duration and cost that provide carrier activation that is suitable for vacation use.

Each plan shown below includes:

  • At least 5Gb included data
  • 30 days duration (unless noted)
ProviderCountryCost
Holafly10Gb – AustraliaUS$34.00
HolaflyUnlimited Data – USAUS$64.00
Airalo10Gb – United KingdomUS$22.50
Airalo10Gb Europe (39 Countries)US$37.00
Nomad5Gb – Global eSIM (110 Countries)US$45.00
Nomad10Gb South East Asia & Oceania – 15 DaysUS$25.00
A range of available plans and data inclusions are available from each providers site.

Local Providers

If you are only travelling to one country, it maybe more financially reasonable to get an eSIM directly from the provider before or when you arrive. Look for providers that provide carrier activation so that you dont need to physically go to an outlet store to sign up.

Some Providers that offer this service are (this is not an exhaustive list):

  • Vodafone Australia
  • T-Mobile USA
  • AT&T USA
  • EE – United Kingdom
  • au – Japan

A more detailed list can be found on the Apple website: Wireless carriers that support eSIM

The availability of eSIM carrier activation will depend on the individual country and local laws and identification requirements to activate the service. In these cases, an eSIM provider like Holafly, Airalo or Nomad maybe the easiest option for you to install.

If you are only going to buy one thing…..

It’s at this point of my articles I give insight on what my preferred option is on these products. To be honest, I dont have a direct answer for you. I will be travelling to the USA in 2023 and since I am going to be in only one country, I will go with a local provider like T-Mobile.
That said, if i was travelling to multiple countries or regions, Holafly would most certainly get my business.

Really… its up to you to make a decision based on your individual circumstances.

Conclusion

While it does take some research to determine what the best option is for you, there is no doubting the benefits of using an eSIM for traveling. They offer convenience, cost savings, and added security for travelers, allowing them to stay connected and productive while on the go without the hassle of traditional SIM cards or excessive global roaming fees. As more mobile devices become compatible with eSIM technology, it is likely that we will see an increasing number of travelers adopt this technology for their mobile connectivity needs.

Good luck with your choice.
